Activities with the AP 21
The Hong Kong Society of Asia Pacific Twenty One (AP 21, 香港亞太二十一學會) was established by a group of Hong Kong scholars, businessmen and political activists on 8 August 1986. Its was credited as the first NGO in the Greater China area to study Asia-Pacific area in the 21st Century. With is non-profit and tax-exemption status granted by the Government of Hong Kong, it has been able to receive donations by business and government sponsorships in the Chinese communities, i.e., Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and the Mainland. And, efforts have been made to solicit support from international bodies.

Forum on Hong Kong-Macau Convergence - First Dinner Gathering on 2 March 2006 was hosted by the AP 21. It was co-sponsored by the City Think Tank and CURS. Mr. L. Medeiros, Deputy Consul-General of Brazil and Prof. Janann Medeiros (University of Brasilia), were invited to give a speech entitled "Building Economic and Social Ties between Brazil and Hong Kong and Macau". In the speech, Mr. Medeiros emphasized the economic power house of Latin America and its growing importance as a trading and political partner of Hong Kong and Macau as well as China as a whole.

The Centre sponsored the 11th International Symposium on Coordination of Chinese Economic Systems (第十一屆中華經濟協作系統國際研討會CSCE XI) which was jointly organized by the AP 21 and Kitakyushu University. The symposium was held at Kitakyushu University, Japan on 9-12 December 2005. Prof. Si-ming Li, Director of CURS, presented his paper "'泛珠三角':一國之內的經濟區域化?兼論香港在泛珠三角所擔當的角色" at the Symposium. More than 60 scholars from the Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Korea and Vietnam took part in it.

The 9th International Symposium on Coordination of Chinese Economic (第九屆中華經濟協作系統國際研討會,CSCE IX) took place in Shanghai on 10-11 January 2004. The Joint Social Sciences Association of Shanghai (JSSAS, 上海市社會科學界聯合會) co-host this event with the AP 21. CURS co-organized this conference.

The theme of the Symposium was "Regional Economy: China's Opportunities, Challenges, and Prospects" (區域經濟:中國面臨的機遇、挑戰與前景). The main topics were discussed included:

1. World Regional Economic Development under Economic Globalization

2. Experience of Mega-city Regions in the World

3. The Impacts of Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) on Cross Straits and Hong Kong and Macau Regional Cooperation

4. Regional Economic Development in China - Cases and Comparative Analysis

 
Yangtze Delta and the Pearl River Delta Region, and also CEPA featured prominently in this conference. About 80 scholars from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, the Mainland China and Japan participated in the 3-day conference. A total of 40 papers were presented.

会议论文集《區域經濟合作--CEPA與珠三角及長三角 》(饒美蛟、李思名及施岳群主編) 由商務印書館于2006年6月出版。 本書的探索範圍除港澳珠三角地區外,同時論及長江三角洲、西部地區以及東亞各國(地區)之間的區域合作,如兩岸四地協作以及中國与日韓、中國与東盟自由貿易區等。本書另一探索重點是關于2003年先後出臺的《香港(或澳門)特別行政區与內地更緊密經貿關係安排》(CEPA)及其對區域經濟合作的影響。本書共收錄34篇論文,作者達40多名,分別來自中港澳臺及日本等地,都是專研中國及亞太經濟的專家學者,各作者對相關題材皆有獨到分析,對有興趣瞭解中國經濟最新發展的讀者,或對研究中國及亞太經濟的人士或研究機構人員,皆甚有幫助。
